Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy

“I have referred hundreds of people for psychological treatment over the years, but I have never seen responses like this… They say that they have never felt better, that they have found a way of dealing with their difficulties that is completely different from anything else they have ever come across”.

The quote is from a distinguished professor of psychiatry in Oxford and an international expert on serious mood disorders who started using mindfulness with his patients whenever they were depressed or started having suicidal thoughts. (Source: Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy by Rebecca Crane)

A picture paints a thousand words and this photo sums up mindfulness in a nutshell!

The power of mindfulness to transform lives is considerable. In terms of my own life, I now look at mindfulness as not necessarily a therapy, but out of all the techniques and therapies I teach and practice, it is now a way of life. Mindfulness can help you attain a more balanced, focused, relaxed and loving approach to living and is a very effective way to live as a HSP. Although it may come across as airy-fairy hemp munching, this is the most practical of guides. Numerous studies have shown that practicing mindfulness has shown marked effectiveness for a wide variety of clinical psychological problems including anxiety, depression, stress management, OCD, social anxiety and personality disorders. It can also have many physical health benefits improving heart disease, lowering blood pressure, reducing chronic pain, improving sleep, and alleviating gastrointestinal difficulties.

Everyone is different - some people find living more mindfully much easier than others. However, with commitment and practice, it is possible to live a less stressful and more meaningful life.

Living mindfully is a way of living which requires gentle persistence and becomes easier the more it is practiced. Just like with meditation, it sounds easier than it actually is.

When I explain the process to people, I can see their eyes glaze over and yes it does sound quite boring and dreary. Yet after a while, a sense of calmness and inner peace takes over and people report they simply feel more at one with the world. Initially it may only be a fleeting feeling, but it gets stronger over time until it becomes a way of life.

Not stuck

Stress and pain are nearly unavoidable in our lives and can leave us feeling irritable, tense, overwhelmed and burned-out. Many of us instinctively respond to stress with frustration and self-criticism. Learning to live in a more mindful way can help us stay calm and balanced in body and mind.

There are many techniques, tips, resources and practical strategies that I can share with clients that can be incorporated into daily life, that help transform them from simply existing into actually living.
